Dig Dug on XBLA

Dig Dug Xbox 360 Arcade Dig Dug originally released by NAMECO in 1982 has made its way onto the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA). Even though Dig Dug is old enough now that there are a number of online versions of the game it is still cool seeing timeless classics such as this still going strong. So, if you have a Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, you can pickup Dig Dug for 400 Market Points or about $5 and play it in high definition.

NES Top 100 List

Super Mario Brothers 3 SydLexia.com recently compiled a list of the 100 Best NES Games Ever. It seems to be a pretty good list, voted on by five different folks with comments from them and somebody else. This list brings back all different sorts of memories from the NES portion of my childhood with favorites such as Paperboy, River City Ransom, the original Megaman series, and of course Super Mario Brothers. Super Mario Brothers 3 in fact was chosen as #1 and Megaman 2 and 3 were also in the top 10. Good stuff. If that doesn’t interest you, I was also amused by Syd’s Girls of the NES article. Syd has definitely played more NES games then I ever have or will.

vNES

Adventure Island II on vNES In an appropriate followup to the Comfort Game thread from a couple a days ago, vNES has at present 395 games and a Java-based NES emulator which allows you to play these games via any Java enabled browser on a Mac or PC. At present, vNES does not allow you to remap the controls or have save games, though both features are being worked on. Pictured to the left is the intro screen of Adventure Island II. I was never that good at it when I was younger and I am no better now. :P Also mentioned in the Gizmodo comments was another site with some old NES games, Every Video Game, though the resolution there is lower and the sound wasn’t as good on my Mac.

Top Five “Comfort Games”

Mega Man 2 Title Screen These days I haven’t been gaming much on the consoles or the PC save Monopoly on Atari Games and Tetris on the DS Lite. But I can appreciate the concept of a “comfort game” which is a game that you play that “can provide comfort in a time of need – be it a need for something familiar or just a quick pick-me-up after a particularly distressing day.” I’d have to say my all-time top five would be in rough order of appearance in my life: Mega Man 2, Super Mario Brother 3, Starcraft (multi-player only), Master of Orion II (multi-player only) and Dark Age of Camelot. If you made it this far, what are your comfort games?

Classic Midway Games Online

Midway Arcade Rampage Midway has put up some of their classic games on their website: Bubbles, Defender, Defender II, Joust, Rampage (pictured to the left), Robotron 2084, Satan’s Hollow, Sinstar, Spyhunter and Tapper. These games require neither money nor registration, but you must have Flash installed and administrative right to install the ArcadeEmulator2 Flash extension. I don’t believe there is a OS X version of ArcadeEmulator2 and there isn’t a Universal Binary of Flash for the Intel based Macs. These games did play under Parallels on my Intel based iMac though.

Retro Gaming Controller Keychains

Atari Keychains Officially licensed by Atari these rather unwieldy keychains each contain playable old school Atari games. Joystick 1 has Asteroids and Millipede, Joystick 2 contains Centipede and Yar’s Revenge while the Paddle features Pong, Breakout, and Warlords. These controllers have a separate “pocket” reel with 6′ of cord with RC jack to connect them to your TV and requires 3 AAA batteries (not included). The Atari keychains would set you back $15.

Monopoly Nintendo Collector’s Edition

Monopoly Nintendo Collectors Edition prototype pieces I saw this when I was browsing my daily comics this morning. It seems that USAopoly is close to releasing a Nintendo version of the classic game of Monopoly. The protoype reviewed below had the pieces pictured to the left and had players buying characters instead of land, but whatever, its still Nintendo and Monopoly and thats sweet. The Monopoly Nintendo Collector’s Edition is available for pre-order with a price of $36 and has an estimated release of July 2006.

Flash Frogger

Flash Frogger at neave.com neave.com features eight classic games including Frogger (linked below) which as you can note by the image to the left, I still don’t have the patience for. I do enjoy hearing the frog get smooshed, so thats OK. I did manage to break 11,000 in Space Invaders before tearing myself away.

nPod

Ben Heckendorn's nPod The nPod is Ben Heckendorn’s latest hardware hack that allows you to portably play old school NES games on a device that is barely larger then the cartridges themselves. Not only that, Ben has great taste in NES games featuring both Megaman II and River City Ransom in some of his nPod photos. Good stuff! Ben appears willing to hand manufacture nPods for $350.
