10 Years of Apple.com

apple.com 1997 The Internet Archive Wayback Machine is a fun little tool (you can even check out this site before I setup WordPress). The problem with the internet archive is it doesn’t always have the images that go with the site as is the case with apple.com, which takes a lot away from the look. The Apple Gazette recently posted six screenshots of the Apple front page from 1996 to today highlighting the changes to the site posing the question: “is it time for apple.com to be redesigned?” The site is working so I am not sure why the would want to do more then tweaking it here or there. Still its cool to remember how the site has evolved.

iLEVL

iLEVL on an iMac The iLEVEL is a simple paper holder that made of metal and coated with a non-slip rubber coating. This allows it to be held to the iMac by the magnet that is meant to hold the remote control (as demonstrated in the second picture on this page) while being small enough not to block the optical drive slot. The iLEVEL is available for $8.

As the Apple Turns

AtAT Sticker Its been one year since the last post on As the Apple Turns. As the Apple Turns (Wikipedia Entry) was my favorite Mac fanboy site back when I first started using the platform shortly before Mac OS X. I still to this day don’t know how Jack and his wife managed to put together three posts a week day while maintaining jobs and for a while after the birth of their first child. As evidenced by Wired Blogs – MIA: Jack Miller from As the Apple Turns and FixYourThinking – Still stalking after a year ;-) I am not alone in missing the site. Somebody even started a paradoy site entitled As the Apple Turns II on Blogspot. Wherever and whatever Jack and his wife are up to, I hope they are doing well. Thanks to them both for their highly entertaining production of As the Apple Turns.

CrossOver Mac Beta 2/Pre-Order

CrossOver Mac Deal CrossOver Mac is an alternative to Parallels and Boot Camp for running Windows applications on an Intel based Mac. Boot Camp requires a separate Windows license so that you can reboot your Mac into Windows. Parallels allows you to run both operating systems simultaneously, but you still have to have a Windows license. CrossOver is designed to allow you run Windows applications “as though they were native” in the same sort of fashion as Rosetta. I have still been too lazy to try it out as Parallels is working well for me. But if you pre-order CrossOver now, you can save $20 and get an additional 3 months of support for $40.

Hello Kitty iPod Dock

Hello Kitty iPod Dock I haven’t seen many impressive Hello Kitty products in a while. I guess its hard to top the Hello Kitty Plane. There isn’t really much impressive about the as of yet unpriced Hello Kitty iPod Dock. But it does have the ever cute Hello Kitty on it, so thats good enough for me at this point. I also wanted to thank Tommy and his wife for getting me some Hello Kitty Sour Cherry candies.

Stefan Constantine and His New iMac

Stefan Constantine new iMac Remember the potential Mac switcher from a month ago? To the left is his picture of his new 20″ iMac. It took him just under a month to raise the necessary funds. Not entirely sure what if anything this proves, but I congratulate him for having the same machine on his desk that I have on mine.

Apple’s New TV Ads

Hodgeman and Long Apple Ads I hadn’t seen a Mac ad on TV since the Apple Intel ad. I saw one for the first and second time today which proves that not only are they showing up during the shows I watch, it also shows that I am not TiVoing through all of the commercials. The ads feature John Hodgman that I recognized immediately from The Daily Show playing a PC and Justin Long whom I didn’t recognize from Dodgeball playing a Mac. I am not an ad critic and I am typing this on a 20″ iMac, so I don’t feel my opinion on the ads themselves counts for much. But for some reason, it makes me happy to see Apple ads.

A Tour of Microsoft’s Mac Lab

Power Mac Montage with Minis I still haven’t read all of the article yet, but the pictures of all the different Macs happily sitting on shelves is worth the effort of the click. Nice to see where they have been testing some of the applications I use everyday. I think the last three versions of office that I have owned have been for the Mac. Very cool of David Weiss to post this.
