7 Myths About the Challenger

the fate of the Challenger All this time, I thought I watched the Challenger blowup live on TV while home sick eating chicken noodle soup (I have such a great mom :) ). While its possible we were watching the shuttle via satellite, I suspect we got our coverage via network TV. Anyway, this article appears to do a good job debunking 7 common misconceptions related to the Challenger disaster.

Flying Moose

Bullwinkle in the air For some reason, watching a news story about moose being flown via helicopter from Utah to Colorado amused me. The moves are part of a wildlife exchange between the two states.

FedEx plane on the road FedEx donated this 727, affectionately named Amber, to Broward Community College’s Aviation Program. Kudos to FedEx for donating a plane for education and thank you Dean Lautermilch for pictures of a plane rolling down the highway.

Airplane Flutter

PSA Lockheed Electra While watching the Modern Marvels ominously entitled “Engineering Disasters 7″ the mentioned the concept of Airplane Flutter. The flutter effect coupled with the whirl mode of the weakly mounted propers of the outside engines ripped a few wings off mid-flight of the Lockhead Electra IIs (Electra story part 1 and part 2 as told by Stuart Lee). The flutter effect also caused the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Besides general interest, no other reason to post this except I did not want to disturb the sleeping Kiwi.

Best UFO Pictures 1870 – Present

UFO - Nashville 1989 UFO Casebook has a section entitled “The Best UFO Pictures Ever Taken”. Most seem to fit the “standard” UFO picture of being blurry and dark. Worth a looksee none the less if you have some free time.

blimp with wings This hybrid aircraft, part blimp, part plane is being developed by Ohio Airships for both commercial and military purposes. Not only could the finished product be useful, it looks snazzy, too.

Map with Commercial Flights in the Air

FlightAware flight watcher Flight Aware has a map function that displays all the big metal birds in the air over the US. There appear to be other useful flight tracking utilities such as seeing the arrivals and departures of flights for a particular airport such as PHF (my “local” airport”.

Alaska Air Flight 536 12/26/2005

Jeremy Hermanns dons his mask On Tuesday, Alaska Air Flight 536 lost cabin pressure at 26,000 feet. They managed to land the plane safely and nobody got hurt (props to the Alaska Air flight crew). The depressurization was caused by a baggage loader who struck the plane on the ground. Anyway, here are the accounts from Jeremy Hermanns who was on the flight (whose self-picture is on the left). I don’t think I would have the composure to take pictures while the cabin of my airplane was leaking air. Anywho, I sure hope AKTreeFrog makes it home safely.

plane that fell apart in mid-air Today at 9PM ET, the History Channel will be airing “Secrets of the Black Box: Aloha Air Flight 243.” During this flight, the upper half of the Boing 737-200 came off mid-flight. Should be pretty interesting.
